I am a digital photographer who specializes in dance photography. I primarily photograph ballet related subject matter. I have a passion for dance and find the elements that encompass ballet to be beautiful; the elaborate costumes and makeup, the choreography, set design and the strength the dancers portray while en pointe. I am drawn to the emotion dancers express while performing in particular. Therefore, the presence of human figures is essential in the majority of my art. I consider myself a fine art photographer as well as a documentary photographer, since I work both in a photography studio and on location photographing rehearsals and performances.
When I set up a photo shoot in the studio I have control over every aspect. I can easily manipulate the lighting and what is visible within the frame of the image. I enjoy working digitally because I am able to see each image I photograph instantly and can then make adjustments as necessary. I can achieve a variety of effects simply by altering the camera functions. By adjusting the shutter speed I can either freeze the dancers’ motion or blur it. Color is a vital component in my work. It can be just as expressive as choreography, especially through the concept of color symbolism.
